UNISA Online Courses for 2027: Qualifications You Can Study Online

The University of South Africa (UNISA) is South Africa's dedicated open distance e-learning (ODeL) university: its qualifications are designed to be studied at a distance, online, without relocating. If you want to study through UNISA in 2027, here is the verified picture — including one urgent deadline fact — checked against UNISA's official website on 11 October 2026.

EduCoast is an independent education publisher and is not affiliated with or endorsed by UNISA. Always confirm details on UNISA's official pages before applying.

Urgent: 2027 undergraduate applications closed on 9 October 2026

UNISA's official undergraduate page states that applications for admission to an undergraduate qualification for 2027 ran from 17 August to 9 October 2026 — so the main 2027 undergraduate window has just closed. The same 17 August–9 October 2026 period applied to honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas. If you missed it, do not pay anyone promising late admission: rather explore the routes below and prepare for the next window.

What you can still pursue for 2027

Master's and doctoral qualifications

UNISA sets a separate application period for master's and doctoral qualifications. Check the official UNISA admissions pages for the current status of the 2027 cycle before acting.

Short Learning Programmes

UNISA's official admissions page confirms that applications for Short Learning Programmes open on 2 November 2026. These are skills-focused courses — valuable, but distinct from full degrees and diplomas, so never mistake a short course for a degree.

Prepare your 2027 second-semester or next-cycle application

UNISA typically opens further application opportunities (including second-semester windows for qualifications with semester modules). Use the waiting time to meet requirements, arrange funding and get documents ready.

How UNISA distance study works

UNISA teaches at a distance: study material and lecturer support are delivered online through myUnisa, and you plan your own study schedule around work and family. This suits learners who cannot relocate — but distance study demands strong self-discipline, reliable internet and a device. Examination formats vary by module (online proctored exams and, in some cases, venue-based sittings or practical components), so confirm the assessment format of your specific modules rather than assuming everything happens at home.

Qualification types you can study through UNISA

UNISA offers the full ladder by distance: Higher Certificates (NQF level 5, often an access route), Diplomas (NQF level 6), Advanced Diplomas, Bachelor's Degrees (NQF level 7), Honours and Postgraduate Diplomas (NQF level 8), and master's and doctoral qualifications. Because availability, admission rules and fees differ per qualification, search UNISA's official qualifications finder and open the page of the exact qualification you want — that page, not a third-party list, is your authority for 2027 availability.

Entry requirements, fees and funding

Each UNISA qualification page publishes its own admission requirements, and UNISA charges a non-refundable application fee that must be paid for your application to be processed — confirm the current amount on the official site. If you need funding, read EduCoast's NSFAS 2027 step-by-step guide and note that UNISA students who qualify can apply for NSFAS like other public-university students.

How to apply (when windows are open)

UNISA applications run through the official UNISA apply site (unisa.ac.za/apply): a multi-step online process where you may apply for a maximum of three qualifications. You may be offered a space based on whether you meet the requirements and on available space — applying does not guarantee admission. Never pay an agent: UNISA warns applicants to use official channels only.

Is UNISA right for you?

UNISA suits self-motivated learners who need maximum flexibility and affordability. It is less suited to learners who need daily face-to-face structure. If your career needs supervised practical hours (for example, teaching or health professions), check how UNISA handles the practical component before committing.
