SANRAL Scholarship Programme 2027 | Grade 8–12 | South Africa

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) is inviting applications for its 2027 Scholarship Programme, providing financial and educational support to qualifying South African learners from Grade 8 to Grade 12.

The scholarship is open to learners at registered South African schools regardless of their subject choices.

Applications for the 2027 academic year opened on 1 July 2026 and close on 30 September 2026.

SANRAL Scholarship Programme 2027

The SANRAL Scholarship Programme is designed to provide financial assistance to learners who demonstrate academic potential and financial need.

SANRAL offers a limited number of scholarships each year, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee that an applicant will be selected.

Selection is based on a combination of academic merit, financial need and the learner's circumstances. SANRAL also states that preference will be given to applicants from Quintile 1–3 public schools, previously disadvantaged communities and rural areas.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

• Be a South African citizen
• Be registered at an endorsed South African school
• Be applying for Grade 8 to Grade 12
• Have a minimum overall academic average of 60%
• Have a total household income of less than R550,000 per year
• Complete the online application in full
• Upload all required supporting documents

What Does the SANRAL Scholarship Cover?

Successful applicants may receive financial and educational support covering:

• School fees
• Boarding school fees, where applicable
• School uniforms
• Sports uniforms, where applicable
• Books and stationery
• Reputable school transport, where applicable
• Extra lessons in Mathematics and Science
• Registration, where applicable
• Access to the SANRAL Wellness Programme

Required Supporting Documents

Applicants should ensure that their supporting documents are prepared before submitting the application.

Letters of motivation

The application requires:

• A motivation letter from the parent or parents
• A two-page motivation letter from the learner, explaining who they are and why they would like to receive a SANRAL scholarship
• A motivation and support letter from the learner's school

Proof of address

Applicants must provide proof of residence, such as:

• Water or electricity bill
• Letter from the local council

The document should be in the name of the parent or legal guardian.

Certified documents

Applicants should also provide certified copies of relevant documents, including:

• June academic results
• Learner's ID document or birth certificate
• Parent or legal guardian ID documents
• Death certificate, where applicable

Proof of household income

Proof of income must be submitted and should not be older than three months at the time of submission.

Where applicable, additional documentation such as affidavits may be required.

SANRAL also requests proof of registration for siblings studying at tertiary institutions where applicable.

• Only one application per applicant is allowed.

• Changes cannot be made after an application has been submitted.

How Are Applicants Selected?

SANRAL receives a large number of applications but has a limited number of scholarships available.

Applications are assessed using factors including:

Meeting the minimum eligibility requirements therefore does not guarantee that a learner will receive a scholarship.

When Will Successful Applicants Be Contacted?

SANRAL states that only successful applicants will be contacted after the final selection process.

Applicants who have not received feedback by 31 January 2027 should consider their application unsuccessful. SANRAL also states that it cannot provide individual feedback to unsuccessful applicants.

Does the Scholarship Guarantee Employment?

No.

Receiving a SANRAL scholarship does not guarantee future employment with SANRAL.
