The University of Limpopo (UL) was established in 2005 following the merger of the University of the North (Turfloop) and the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA). For a time, it had two campuses — Turfloop and Medunsa — but in 2015 the Medunsa Campus separated to become the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU).

Today, UL functions as a single-campus university based at Turfloop, near Polokwane in Limpopo Province. With over 20,000 students, the university plays a crucial role in providing higher education in the northern part of South Africa, especially for students from rural and semi-urban backgrounds.UL is widely respected for its programmes in health sciences, education, agriculture, law, and social sciences, while also hosting significant research in rural development and community engagement.
