Harry Gwala Secondary School Hits All The Right Notes at National Choral EisteddfodWhat an incredible achievement for Harry Gwala Secondary School! Their choir's dedication and talent truly paid off as they brought home three prestigious trophies from the 2025 South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod!

This national competition, a fantastic initiative by the Department of Basic Education, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, and the Motsepe Foundation, celebrates the incredible singing abilities of learners from across the country.

The Khayelitsha-based school's hard work was evident:

  • Silver for the Quartette! Led by the inspiring Mr. Mhlalisi Mungeka, their small ensemble secured a fantastic silver medal.

  • A Star is Born! But the real showstopper was Yongama Takane, a phenomenal Grade 11 learner. Her breathtaking rendition of "Tornami a vagheggiar" from Handel's opera Alcina captivated everyone, earning her first place in the soprano solo category and the coveted title of best soloist of the entire competition!

Harry Gwala Secondary School Hits All The Right Notes at National Choral EisteddfodYongama humbly attributed their success to the choir's relentless effort and the guiding hand of Mr. Mungeka. "He's a demanding teacher, but we appreciate the lessons he teaches us. It makes us better musicians and young people," she shared. That's the mark of true mentorship!

A huge shout-out also goes to Paarl School, another Western Cape institution, who proudly earned a bronze in the Special Schools division.

Congratulations to all the talented learners and dedicated teachers! Your passion for music truly shines!
