Prepare the following certified documents in clear PDF format:

• South African ID or passport (if international)

• Final Grade 11 report or NSC certificate

• Academic transcripts (if you’ve studied elsewhere)

• Proof of residence (may be required for NSFAS)

• Proof of payment for the application fee

2. Application Fee

• R200 for all applicants

• Payment must be made before submitting the online application

• Use your ID number as the reference when making payment

• Applications open: 1 April 2025

• Applications close: 29 July 2025
  Note: SMU closes much earlier than most universities — do not delay your application.

4. Step-by-Step Application Process

1. Visit www.smu.ac.za

2. Click “Online Application” under the admissions section

3. Register using your ID/passport number and a valid email

4. Complete all required personal and academic information

5. Choose one or two study programmes (Health Sciences only)

6. Upload the required certified documents

7. Pay the R200 application fee and upload proof of payment

8. Submit and take note of your application/student number

5. What Happens After Applying?

• You’ll receive an SMS or email confirmation

• Selection is strictly based on academic performance — only qualifying applicants are invited for interviews (if required)

• Successful applicants receive admission offers with instructions to register

6. Admission Requirements (General)

SMU offers health-related degrees only. Minimum requirements include:

• Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB):

  • APS: 34+

  • Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Mathematics: level 5+

  • English: level 5+

• Bachelor of Pharmacy / Oral Hygiene / Physiotherapy / Nursing:

  • APS scores range from 28 to 34

  • Mathematics, Life Science, and Physical Science are compulsory

Meeting the minimum does not guarantee selection — competition is high.
