The Occupational Certificate: Boatbuilding and Repair (Boatbuilder) NQF Level 2–4 is a specialised three-year apprenticeship programme designed to prepare learners for a skilled career in the boatbuilding and marine repair industry. This qualification equips you to build, maintain, and repair boats, as well as install and service various marine systems — from electrical and propulsion systems to plumbing and steering — using a wide range of materials, including fibreglass, wood, aluminium, and composites.

The programme offers a structured learning and career pathway, supporting the growth of South Africa’s boatbuilding industry while ensuring graduates meet the standards required for both local and international marine sectors.

Duration

This is a three-year apprenticeship programme, with each year divided into:

  • 6 months of classroom-based training at the college

  • 6 months of industry-based experience, applying practical skills in real marine workshops and boatyards

Minimum Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold one of the following:

  • National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) with Mathematics

  • National Certificate (Vocational) at NQF Level 4

  • N3 Mechanical Engineering
