The University of South Africa (Unisa) is South Africa's largest open distance learning institution and one of the world's mega universities, providing undergraduate and postgraduate education, vocational and professional programmes to a diverse student body across Africa and beyond.

History

Unisa traces its roots to the University of the Cape of Good Hope established in 1873. Reconstituted as the University of South Africa in 1916, it originally operated as an examining and degree-conferring body. From the mid-20th century it developed a distinctive open distance learning model and expanded nationally and internationally, becoming a leading provider of distance higher education in Africa.
