Nelson Mandela University is a comprehensive public university based in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The university offers a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple faculties, with a strong emphasis on engaged scholarship, social justice, sustainability and ocean sciences.
History
Nelson Mandela University was formed in 2005 through the merger of the University of Port Elizabeth, Port Elizabeth Technikon and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University. Initially established as Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, the institution adopted the shorter public name Nelson Mandela University in 2017. Since its formation the university has expanded academic offerings, developed specialised research in areas such as ocean sciences and sustainability, and deepened community engagement in the Eastern Cape.
