About This Qualification

The Occupational Certificate: Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Technician is a nationally recognised programme designed to meet South Africa’s growing need for skilled renewable energy professionals. Entry Requirements

To enrol in this programme, applicants must have:

  • An NQF Level 4 qualification with Mathematics, or

  • NC(V) Level 4 in Electrical Infrastructure and Construction

(NQF Level 4 is equivalent to completing Grade 12 or N3.)

Core Skills and Competencies

Learners will develop expertise in:

  • Planning and preparing for solar PV system installation

  • Installing mechanical components of a solar PV system

  • Installing electrical components of a solar PV system

  • Maintaining, testing, and replacing PV panel components

  • Maintaining, testing, repairing, and replacing inverters and transformers

  • Maintaining, testing, and replacing cables, cable interconnections, smart boxes, PV junction/string boxes, string diodes, connectors, fuses, switchgear, and control gear, including repairs where possible

  • Maintaining, testing, and replacing batteries and charge controllers, including repair of charge controllers when possible
