History
The University of the Witwatersrand traces its origins to the South African School of Mines, established in 1896. It was granted full university status in 1922 as the University of the Witwatersrand. Over the 20th century Wits expanded into a comprehensive research university, playing a significant role in South Africa's intellectual life and in the struggle against apartheid. The university has developed extensive research capabilities, numerous professional schools, and strong community and international partnerships.
