The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a public, research-led university in Bellville, Cape Town. Established in 1959, it is known for its legacy of social justice, community engagement and graduate employability, and offers undergraduate and postgraduate study across seven faculties.
History
Established in 1959, the University of the Western Cape grew from an apartheid-era institution into a centre of intellectual resistance and democratic transformation. Today UWC is an inclusive public university whose teaching, research and community engagement address South African, African and global challenges.
