UFS
The University of the Free State (UFS) is a public university located in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Established in 1904, UFS offers a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple faculties and campuses, with a strong emphasis on research, community engagement and transformation in the Free State province and beyond.
History
Founded in 1904 as Grey College University (later Grey University College) in Bloemfontein, the institution evolved into the University of the Free State. Over its history the university has grown from a small regional college into a comprehensive modern university with multiple campuses, a widening programme portfolio and an increasing emphasis on research, internationalisation and social responsiveness. In the post-apartheid era UFS has undertaken transformation and inclusion initiatives, expanded access through its QwaQwa campus and strengthened community engagement and research aimed at regional development.
