The University of Pretoria (UP) is a leading public research university in Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa. Established in 1908, UP offers a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple faculties, and is recognised for research output, professional training (including medicine and veterinary sciences), and extensive student life under the Tuks brand.
History
Founded in 1908 as the Pretoria campus of the Transvaal University College, the institution developed into the independent University of Pretoria and was formally established as a university in 1930. Over the 20th and 21st centuries UP expanded its academic offerings and campuses, established professional faculties (medicine, veterinary science, law, engineering), and grew into one of South Africa's largest and most research-intensive universities. It has a long history of community engagement, international collaboration and contributions to national development.
