University of Limpopo
The University of Limpopo (UL) is a public university based in the Limpopo province of South Africa. Its historic Turfloop (Mankweng) campus serves as the main campus. UL offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across humanities, management and law, science and agriculture, and health-related fields, and emphasises research, community engagement and regional development.
History
The University of Limpopo was established in 2005 through the merger of the University of the North (commonly known as Turfloop) and the Medical University of South Africa (MEDUNSA). The University of the North traces its origins to institutions created to educate black South Africans during the apartheid era and played an important role in the intellectual and political life of the region. MEDUNSA (founded in the 1970s as a medical institution serving disadvantaged communities) merged into the University of Limpopo in 2005; MEDUNSA later became Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University following legislative changes and the formal separation in subsequent years. Since its formation, UL has maintained a focus on responsive teaching, research and community service in Limpopo and the broader northern region.
