UKZN
The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is a public research university in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, with major campuses in Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Formed through a merger in 2004, UKZN offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across health sciences, humanities, law, management, engineering, agriculture and the sciences, and is known for its research output, community engagement and diverse student population.
History
The University of KwaZulu-Natal was established in 2004 through the merger of the University of Natal (founded 1910) and the University of Durban-Westville. The merger was part of a national higher-education restructuring process intended to improve efficiency, widen access and redress apartheid-era inequities. The unified institution built on the academic traditions and strengths of its predecessors, combining campuses and faculties across Durban and Pietermaritzburg and developing a multi-campus research-led university with a strong focus on transformation, community engagement and regional development.
