The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is a comprehensive public university located in Gauteng, South Africa. Established through a merger in 2005, UJ offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple faculties and campuses with a focus on research, innovation and social responsiveness in an African and global context.

History

The University of Johannesburg was established in 2005 following the merger of Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) and certain campuses of Vista University. The merger aimed to create a more inclusive, comprehensive and competitive institution positioned to respond to South Africa's higher education transformation goals. Since its formation UJ has expanded its academic offerings, research capacity and community engagement across multiple campuses in Johannesburg and Soweto.

To advance and sustain excellent, relevant teaching, learning and research and to produce graduates who are critical, creative and committed to contributing to a socially just and prosperous society.

Application dates and information

All application dates

Applications are submitted online via the UJ website. Entry requirements vary by faculty and programme and typically include the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) or approved equivalent for undergraduate study, and relevant qualifications for postgraduate study. International applicants must submit certified copies of qualifications, proof of English proficiency where required, and may need to have results evaluated. Application opening and closing dates, and specific programme requirements (including portfolios or interviews for selected programmes) are published annually on the UJ admissions webpages. Student experience

Student life

UJ offers a diverse student experience with on-campus residences, student societies and clubs spanning academic, cultural, religious and recreational interests. Sport is an important part of campus life, with facilities and teams for rugby, soccer, netball, athletics and more. The university provides academic support services, counselling, student health services, careers and graduate placement support, and community engagement opportunities.
