History
UCT traces its origins to the South African College founded in 1829. It was established as the University of Cape Town by Act of Parliament in 1918. Over the 20th and 21st centuries UCT expanded into a comprehensive university with multiple faculties, built an international research profile, and played a prominent role in South African intellectual life and the struggle against apartheid. The university continues to grow its research capacity, infrastructure and partnerships locally and internationally.
