History
Stellenbosch University's origins date back to the mid-19th century with the establishment of institutions of higher learning in the town of Stellenbosch. The university was formally established in 1918 and has since grown from a small regional institution into one of South Africa's foremost research-intensive universities. Throughout its history SU has undergone significant transformation in language policy, curricular development and institutional governance, expanding campuses and facilities, building international partnerships, and broadening access while maintaining a strong research profile across the sciences, humanities, engineering, health sciences and other fields.
