North-West University

North-West University (NWU) is a public research university in South Africa with multi-campus operations focused on teaching, research and community engagement. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes across a broad range of disciplines and serves diverse local, national and international student communities.

History

North-West University was established in 2004 through the merger of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of the North West (Mafikeng campus), creating a multi-campus institution with Potchefstroom, Mahikeng (Mafikeng) and Vaal Triangle (Vanderbijlpark) campuses. Since its founding, NWU has developed its research capacity, expanded academic offerings, and strengthened partnerships with industry and community organisations across the North West Province and beyond.

All application dates

Applications are submitted online via the NWU student application portal on the university website. Prospective students should consult faculty-specific admission requirements, programme-specific selection criteria, closing dates for applications and required supporting documents (certified academic transcripts, identity document, proof of payment where applicable). International applicants must follow the international admissions process and provide study permits where required. Financial aid and scholarships information, including NSFAS for qualifying South African students, is available on the NWU website.

Student experience

Student life

Student life at NWU includes residence accommodation on each campus, a wide variety of student societies and clubs (academic, cultural, political and recreational), vibrant student governance structures (student representative councils and student councils), and extensive sports facilities and programmes. Campuses host cultural events, career fairs, community engagement projects and student wellness services (counselling, health services and academic support). The university supports student entrepreneurship and volunteerism through campus-based initiatives and partnerships.
