How to Apply: A Step-by-Step Guide
Applying for NSFAS is a straightforward online process. Follow these steps carefully:
Visit the Official Website: Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the "myNSFAS" portal.
Create Your Profile: You must create a myNSFAS account. You will need your own valid cellphone number and email address to register.
Verify Your Account: Once registered, an OTP (One-Time Pin) will be sent to your cellphone and email. Use this to verify your account.
Log In: Use the username and password you created to log in to your myNSFAS account.
Start Your Application: Click on the "Apply" tab to begin your 2026 application.
Fill in Your Details: Complete all sections of the application form accurately. This includes your personal details, study plans, and parent/guardian information.
Upload Your Documents: This is the most important part. Scan and upload clear, certified copies of all required documents (see the list below).
Submit: Read and accept the terms and conditions, then click "Submit." You will receive a reference number as proof that your application has been submitted.
Required Documents: Get These Ready!
To ensure your application is processed, you must upload the correct documents. All certified copies must not be older than 3 months.
All Applicants:
A certified copy of your South African ID book/card (or a certified copy of your unabridged birth certificate if you are under 18).
Certified copies of your parents', guardian's, or spouse's ID(s).
Proof of income: Certified copies of your parents', guardian's, or spouse's latest payslips (not older than 3 months). If they are unemployed, a non-SASSA affidavit is required.
A completed and signed NSFAS Consent Form (downloadable from the website). This gives NSFAS permission to verify your household income.
If You Are a SASSA Grant Recipient:
You do not need to provide proof of income. The system will automatically verify your SASSA status. You only need to submit your certified ID copy and the consent form.
If You Have a Disability:
A completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form, which must be filled out by a medical professional.
If Your Parents Are Deceased or You Are an Orphan:
Certified copies of death certificates for the deceased parent(s).
A completed and signed Orphan or Vulnerable Child Declaration Form.
Application Tips for Success
Apply Early: The deadline is 15 November 2025. Do not wait until the last day. The system gets very busy, which can lead to errors or delays.
Certification is Key: Make sure your document copies are certified at a police station or the Post Office. Certification must not be older than 3 months.
One Applicant, One Account: You must use your own cellphone number and email address to create your own myNSFAS account. Do not use a friend's, parent's, or cyber cafe's details. NSFAS will communicate with you directly.
The Application is FREE: You do not have to pay anyone to apply for NSFAS. Be cautious of any scams or individuals asking for a fee.
Check Your Status: After applying, log in to your myNSFAS portal regularly to track your application status. If your status is "Awaiting Documents," it means you must upload the missing information immediately.
Double-Check Everything: Ensure your ID number, your parents' ID numbers, and all other details are 100% correct before submitting. Simple mistakes can cause major delays.
